Presentation and Sale Period: Released in January 1975 (Altairs were sold as kits via mail through advertisements on technology-related magazines)

Processor: Intel 8080 (@2 MHz)

Memory: 256 Bytes (expandable)

Storage Media: Paper tape reader (sold separately)

Operating System: Altair BASIC; Altair DOS (available from August 1977)

Notes: The Altair 8800 incorporated the S-100 bus for expansions, which constituted the first industry-standard expansion bus for microcomputers. The BASIC interpreter for the machine, Altair BASIC, was developed by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, and constitutes the first Microsoft product.
